¡Bienvenidos a la sociedad española!

FALL 2007

Posted by: spansoc on: October 27, 2007

¡Hola a todos!

We hope all is going well in this Fall term!

As many of the members have graduated and moved on from Waterloo la Sociedad is in need of participants to continue and lead the club through social events and bring its members together to celebrate the Spanish-speaking culture.

We would like to invite those who are interested to visit the Spanish Lounge, ML 245B, and take a look at organizing some social events for the students who share a passion for the culture. It does take a little bit of time but events do not need to be fancy, it is as much as coordinating with some friends to have a movie night, or salsa night or a conversation session.

The Spanish Society hosts, usually in coordination with LASALAS (WLU), an annual semi-formal dinner and dance for students and professors of the department. In order for this to be a success again this Winter, la Sociedad is in need of some students to take the role of participating in the Executive team.

If you are at all interested in participating, in any degree, to keep la Sociedad Española running, please contact Dra. Sillato or Dra. Gutierrez of the Spanish department.

Many thanks for your participation in this matter in advance! Good luck with all your studies this term!

Movie Night Update!

Posted by: spansoc on: February 6, 2007

¡Hola a todos!

We have some unfortunate news: movie night in MC2065 is CANCELLED!!! Due to University of Waterloo policies, since the Spanish Department secretary is not here today, they can’t give us the key to the A/V equipment. So we don’t have a room to show Amores Perros. SORRY!

For those that are looking forward to seeing a movie tonight, we recommend the following alternative:

VOLVER
Princess Cinema @ 7PM
6 Princess Street West, Waterloo
http://www.princesscinemas.com/

Spain 2006, 121 minutes. Directed by Pedro Almodóvar. STARRING Penélope Cruz (OSCAR NOMINEE! BEST ACTRESS).
** In Spanish with english subtitles.

Three generations of women survive easterly wind, fire, madness, superstition and even death through goodness, lies and an unlimited vitality. They are: Raimunda (Penélope Cruz), married to an unemployed worker, and her teenager daughter (Yohana Cobo). Sole (Lola Dueñas), her sister, who earns her living as hairdresser. And their mother (Carmen Maura), dead in a burning, with her husband. This character comes as an apparition first to her sister (Chus Lampreave) and then to Sole, even though the ones she had unsettled affairs with were Raimunda and her village neighbour, Agustina (Blanca Portillo). ‘Volver’ is not a surreal comedy, though it might seem so at times. The living and the dead live together without problems, but provoking hilarious situations and others full of deep and genuine emotion. It is a movie about the culture of death in my native region, La Mancha. My folks there live it in astonishing simplicity. The way in which the dead are still present in their lifes, the richness and humanity of their rites makes it possible for the dead to never really die. ‘Volver’ shatters all clichés of a dark Spain and shows a Spain that is as real as it is opposed. A white Spain, spontaneous, fun, fearless, fair and with solidarity.

Take care!
Hasta pronto

Back in Action for Winter Term

Posted by: spansoc on: January 20, 2007

¡Hola a todos!

We hope everyone had a Feliz Navidad y un Feliz Año!

Well, the Winter term is well underway so the Spanish Society is back in action after a snow day put things on hold…

We are in the midst of planning a Spanish Department Formal, hopefully in coordination with Laurier’s LASALAS, as well as planning some events for the term.

Monday afternoon meetings have resumed in ML245B (Spanish Lounge) @ 4:30pm for conversation classes and event planning.

We have two movie nights planned; Tuesday February 6th in MC2065 and the second, Tuesday March 6th in MC2065 both start @ 7:30pm. We plan to show Amores Perros and Y Tú Mama También. Both are classic movies which are always well received.

Salsa lessons have resumed at the Turret at Laurier. If you have left over lessons from last term, they are transferable to this term. They take place on Wednesdays at 8pm.

Hopefully we will see some faces this upcoming Monday in the Spanish Lounge and we can talk some more regarding the Society!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
Hasta el lunes,

La Sociedad Española

Amores perros (2000)

Posted by: spansoc on: January 20, 2007

Tuesday, February 6, in MC2065 @ 7:30PM.

Amores perros (Love’s a Bitch in some English-speaking markets) is an Academy Award nominated 2000 Mexican film. It is the first film of a trilogy by director Alejandro González Iñárritu who later directed the films 21 Grams and Babel.

Amores perros was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2001.

AMORES PERROS is a bold, intensely emotional, and ambitious story of lives that collide in a Mexico City car crash. Inventively structured as a triptych of overlapping and intersecting narratives, AMORES PERROS explores the lives of disparate characters who are catapulted into unforeseen dramatic situations instigated by the seemingly inconsequential destiny of a dog named Cofi.

In “Octavio and Susana,” Cofi’s teenage owner enters his dog into the brutal world of dog fighting to raise money for his elopement with his brother’s young and appealing wife. Cofi’s near-fatal injury prompts a reckless car chase that ends abruptly and violently. In “Daniel and Valeria,” a middle-aged businessman discovers that dreams can become nightmares after he abandons his family to set up housekeeping with a beautiful young model who is tragically transformed by the crash. Finally, in “El Chivo and Maru,” a revolutionary-turned-assassin witnesses the accident and finds that it leads him to an unexpected and life-altering moral epiphany.

A powerful and profound story of love, loss, retribution and redemption, AMORES PERROS raises provocative questions about the human condition at the same time that the film daringly recapitulates and reinvents different styles of Latin cinema. The result is a vivid and intricate mosaic of classic themes rendered in original — and unforgettable ways.

The brutality of Amores Perros may be difficult to watch at times, but this intense, gritty film packs a hard wallop.

POTLUCK

Posted by: spansoc on: November 8, 2006

Since the term is winding down and exams are looming :S , we are holding a final event of the term!
Conversation classes will continue and so will salsa at the Turret but one more group event as the UW SpanSoc before crunch time hits!

Monday November 20th we are holding a potluck dinner! It will
take place starting 5:30-6pm and go until ??? We are having it off-
campus, at Jessica’s house, the address is ****************** in
Waterloo. In case travelling off-campus is difficult for you, we will
provide a “shuttle” from the SLC around 5:30pm. :)
If everyone could plan to bring something..a cooked dish, snacks, or
drinks, ANYTHING would be fabulous. We can also use the appliances at
Jessica’s house so if you need to heat anything up..by all means!
Please send us what you are planning to bring so we can avoid too
much repetition of the same thing..the last thing we want is for
everyone to be full of nachos!
(There will be NO conversation/tutoring class that Monday)

SOCIETY MEETING

All those interested in organizing events and running the Spanish Society for the 2007-2008 year, should come Monday @ 4:30pm in the Spanish Lounge, ML245B.
